Greene and Greene Lighting

Hand Crafted Arts & Crafts Style Wood and Stained Glass Lighting

Craftsmen Studio focuses on recreating the timeless lighting designs of architects Charles and Henry Greene. Each fixture is built using hand selected mahogany, genuine Gaboon ebony inlays, and handmade copper foil–stained glass. Many designs are faithful reproductions of pieces from the Greene brothers’ most celebrated California homes, including the Blacker House, Gamble House, and Pratt House, and others. While some are my own original creations, inspired by their style and philosophy. Art work that is meant to be used every day to light you homes, your meals, or a favorit book. Custom design work is available upon request.

Charles and Henry Greene were two of California’s most celebrated architects of the Arts and Crafts era. Their work seemlessly blended the principles of the American Arts and Crafts movement with the refined, graceful details of Japanese craftsmanship. During the early 1900s, the brothers designed some of the state’s most significant and historically cherished estates—homes that would come to be known as the “ultimate bungalows.”

Among their most famous works are the Robert R. Blacker House, the David B. Gamble House, the Freeman A. Ford House, the William R. Thorsen House, and the Charles M. Pratt House. The Greenes approached each project holistically, designing not only the structures themselves but also the landscaping, furniture, moldings, lighting, doors, and even the rugs. Every detail was considered, transforming each property into a cohesive, functional work of art.

Their remarkable attention to detail and dedication to craftsmanship have inspired generations of artisans, including myself. The artistry they achieved helped shape an entirely new genre of furniture and design—one that remains highly sought after more than a century later.
