San Mateo Tulip Ceiling Fixture

Greene & Greene Inspired — Jennie A. Reeve House, 1904

The San Mateo Tulip is an original Craftsmen Studio design adapted from the lighting of the Jennie A. Reeve House in Long Beach, California, completed in 1904 — one of Charles and Henry Greene's earliest and most significant residential commissions, and a pivotal work in their development toward the Arts and Crafts style they would perfect in the Gamble and Pratt Houses just a few years later.

The mahogany frame is handcrafted from hand-selected African mahogany with genuine Gaboon ebony accent details and intricate decorative cutouts — a hallmark of Greene & Greene's approach to structural ornament. These openings do more than add visual interest: they allow light to spill through the woodwork and cast the cutout pattern softly across the surrounding ceiling, turning the entire room into part of the lighting design.

The hand-made stained glass panels depict an elegant tulip motif crafted using the copper foil method — an amber background from which green stems rise to support a fiery, warm-toned bloom. The result is a rich, romantic light unlike anything a standard fixture can produce, shifting subtly with the time of day and bringing the organic beauty of the Arts and Crafts tradition into your home.
