Berkeley Sconce
Greene & Greene Inspired Wall Sconce — Culbertson House
The Berkeley wall sconce is inspired by the original lighting in Greene & Greene's Culbertson House in Pasadena — a commission that Charles and Henry Greene approached with the same holistic attention to detail as their more celebrated Gamble and Blacker House projects. The Berkeley takes the most architecturally pure form of any sconce in the collection. The simplistic four post and rail design draw focus to the elegant glass design of this piece.
The glass panels are the defining detail — large fields of warm amber glass with a vertical lead motif running down from the top rail. Fine vertical lines descend and terminate in small rectangular key shapes at their tips, a detail closely associated with the Culbertson House interiors and with Greene & Greene's characteristic approach to decorative metalwork within glass. When lit, the amber panels produce a rich, deeply warm glow that fills a room with the particular quality of light most associated with Arts and Crafts interiors. Available in two sizes — the small carries a single socket, the large carries two — both rated for up to 75 watts each.
